How to Choose a Compliance Provider

Evaluate fit, security, reporting channels, and expertise

How do you choose a provider of compliance services? Consider these practical criteria before deciding.

The growing compliance sector

Compliance programs vary, but each should help prevent unlawful conduct and reduce exposure to sanctions. Differences among providers matter.

Consider whether a provider understands the languages, culture, and operations of your organization. Local knowledge may improve reporting quality, while an international provider may bring other strengths.

Check where data will be handled and which privacy and security rules apply. A provider's nationality alone does not establish compliance; its actual safeguards and legal arrangements do.

Differences worth evaluating

The degree of specialization in an ethics hotline matters. Ask whether report intake and case management are core services or peripheral offerings.

Review how the software is built and maintained, whether internally or with vendors. What matters is the provider's ability to improve, customize, secure, and scale it responsibly.

The companies should also assess the staff receiving reports. General call-center training may not cover the sensitivity of investigations, ethics, and compliance.

Look for demonstrated investigative training and experience. Do not assume that claims about lie detection establish reliable practice; evaluate methods and safeguards directly.

Case-management tools should help teams receive, investigate, document, and resolve reports. Ask for a demonstration of the workflows and controls that matter to you.

Customization can be important: the channel should fit the organization's needs, industry, languages, and case types rather than impose an unsuitable one-size-fits-all process.

User management matters too. Role-based permissions can support appropriate access, communication, and teamwork.

Key features of an ethics hotline provider

Review the available reporting channels, such as a dedicated phone line, website, chat, app, messaging service, or email. More channels may improve access, but any numerical uplift claimed by a vendor should be supported by evidence relevant to your organization.

Check the full scope of the service. Outreach, training, investigation support, and guidance on ethics practices may be included or priced separately.

Security deserves close scrutiny. Evaluate encryption, access controls, audit logging, independent assessments, data separation, and the provider's infrastructure and incident response.

EthicsGlobal offers service levels designed for organizations of different sizes and needs, with options to adjust a plan as requirements change.
