Justice and ethics in organizations aim to reduce inequality and turn regulatory commitments into concrete action.

Social justice in organizations

As the International Labour Organization (ILO) marks the World Day of Social Justice, it is worth remembering the importance of gender equality and ending discrimination. Social justice calls for ethics to be put into practice in organizations.

This article looks at how the movement developed, the goals discussed for the years ahead, how corporate ethics can support the ILO's agenda through concrete action, and how these efforts relate to regulation.

World Day of Social Justice

In 2008, the ILO adopted a declaration on social justice for a fairer globalization, setting out broad principles and policies for its member countries.

The article describes a 2020 agenda for closing inequality gaps and advancing social justice, including better access to employment and more secure work. It discusses reducing unemployment and improving working conditions.

It highlights gender equality, the rights of Indigenous peoples and migrants, and the removal of barriers linked to age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture, or disability.

Corporate ethics

Although employment has not developed as hoped, corporate ethics can help prevent discrimination through three important elements:

  • A reporting hotline
  • A Code of Ethics
  • An ethics committee

The hotline helps identify and monitor conduct; the code sets expectations for behavior inside and outside the organization; and the committee supports prevention, improvement, and responses to misconduct.

The original article cites Mexican standards NOM-025-STPS-2008 and NOM-035-STPS-2018 as examples of efforts to prevent discrimination and assess psychosocial risks. It discusses surveys, reporting channels, and nondiscrimination policies as measures organizations can use.

With more than 20 years of experience implementing compliance systems and advising organizations, EthicsGlobal offers tailored solutions to support more inclusive corporate ethics and reduce discrimination.
